A technique for using the laser of a DVD burner to create a design on the top surface of a disc. Basically all you have to do is burn the data on one side, flip the disc over and then burn the design on the other side, removing the need for a separate printer all together.
1st of all you need a burner that is capable of using the LightScribe feature, and then you need the specially coated LightScribe disc.

Do LightScribe discs work on normal burners?
You are able to burn to the data side of the disc as normal, but you will not be able to use the special LightScribe feature to burn a design on the top surface. You are only able to burn designs into a LightScribe disc.

What is LightScribe version 2?
Version 2 of the discs (We are currently using Version 1.2) is a 'speed enhanced' version of the disc. Essentially it allow you to burn the design onto the discs upto 20% faster.

Will the new LightScribe version 2 discs work on my current LightScribe burner?
The new discs will work at the new faster speed on existing LightScribe burners, however it will require a software update.
At the moment the discs are just grayscale, similar to a black and white picture, but there are a few different back ground colours available.
The colours available are Red, Green, Orange, Yellow, Blue and the original Gold colour.
A full colour burning system is touted to happen before the end of 2008, but there is no evidence for that at the moment.

What is LabelFlash?
This is a rival technology to Lightscribe that uses the same basic idea of a burner creating a design on the disc. The discs are a dark blue that gets lighter as the laser burns onto it, revealing the pattern.
Unfortunately for the people behind LabelFlash it appears that the LightScribe system is much more sucessful, so the number of LabelFlash discs on the market appear to be dwindling.
