Why can I only fit 700MB on a disc that claims to be 730MB?
This comes down to the difference in a binary numbering system and decimal numbering system.
Simply put 1MB is not actually 1,000,000 bytes
- One Kilobyte is 1024 bytes, and one Megabyte is 1024 kilobytes
- Therefore one Megabyte is 1024 x 1024 bytes = 1,048,576 bytes
- If you then store 700MB on a CD, you are actually storing 700 x 1,048,576 bytes, which equals 734,003,200 bytes
A little bit is generally used for storing the locations of the info and trying to make the discs as compatible as possible so you end up with around 730MB's.

My LightScribe discs aren't recognised as such when put in my LightScribe burner
In the case that you get an error message stating that the disc is either not a LightScribe disc, or that the data can't be read from the hub, there are a few things to check and try
- Make sure that the disc is actually a LightScribe disc and you have inserted it into the machine the correct way round (Label side facing downwards)
- Make sure the disc is clean and there is no dirt obscuring the bar code on the hub on the label side
- Update the firmware on your drive by going to either this firmware page or the manufacturers website
- Update the LightScribe System Software (LSS) by going to this page
If that doesn't solve the issue then it could be a fault in the media or a fault in the drive. We would suggest that you try the disc out in another machine, if possible, or you could try another disc to see if you get the same problems.

I am unable to write to the CD I bought from you. Is there something wrong with your discs?
The first thing to do is to check to make sure that the CD is compatible with your CD writer. Although this isn't a mjor problem these days there can still be some compatibility problems with certain discs on certain optical drives.
Update the firmware on your optical drive to ensure that this isn't the case.
Also there are various type's of CD's.
Certain high-speed discs will not work with lower speed writers, under 10x.
Silver/Blue discs use a cyanine dye, which has a maximum recording speed of 24x.
The yellow-green dye is pthalocyanine, and has a maximum recording speed of 52x.
Most discs are of the last variety, 52x dscs, and you shouldn't have any problems with any discs that we sell.
One thing to check before getting in touch is to try another type of writing software. If you are using Roxio EasyCD Creator then try Nero or InCD and vice-versa.
We would recommend using the newest version of Nero to produce the best results.

I am unable to burn the disc upto the 99mins stated by the 900MB capacity. Did I get the wrong discs?
- When you first insert the disc it will state the size at the normal size of around 700MB. You first have to make sure that your CDwriter can use the overburn facility that allows the allocation of much larger files.
- If you do have this facility then you have to enable this function and you should be able to burn to the full 900MB.
- For a comprehensive guide on how to do this using Nero, the software we would recommend using, you can visit this page on our website overburn
- Additionally, while overburning you are approaching the edge of the CD's capabilities and thus damage can be caused. Therefore sometimes the software will refuse to allow this function.

Disc speed is stated as 48x yet the disc won't srite at that speed. Why is this?
- While the disc is quoted at writable up-to that speed, the writing program will sometimes write at a slower speed to improve stability of the writing process.
- The discs themselves are tested to 52x but the faster the speed the greater the possibility that damage can be done to the disc in the writing process.
- Writers do not write at 48x all the way - they write at 48x MAX - on the outside of the disc, near the end of the writing cycle on a full disc.
- A 48x writer, up until about 400mb has an effective write speed of only 14x. The manufacturers are quite deceptive about all this - but try it - you'll see it's true.
- We also recommend using the newest version of Nero to produce the best results.

I am unable to write to the full size quoted on the disc. Why is this?
- There is various reasons why the size of the disc can't be reached.
- The main one being confusion over the labelling of discs.
One kilobyte is 1024 bytes, and one Megabyte is 1024 kilobytes.
One megabyte on a hard disk is 1024 x 1024 bytes = 1,048,576 bytes.
If you store 700mb on a CD, that is 700 x 1,048,576 bytes of hard diskspace, which would equal 734,003,200 bytes of hard disk space
- We leave a small margin for universal compatibility, so we quote 730MB
- It can depend on the size of the files. If you have a few big files, you can fill up the disc quickly. If you have many small files, the index tables will take up a lot of space.
- Most writing programs will set aside some space to organise the disc to their liking. This generally causes the disc size to be slightly less than stated.

What software do you recommend for burning CD's?
- We recommend that you use the latest version of Nero.
- It is a very robust piece of software that supports most disc types as well as being easy to use.
- A trial version is available from their website www.ahead.de

How do I clean the lens of my optical drive?
A Pressit Drive Cleaning Kit, PLDCK, is a CD that is designed to clean the lens of your optical drive.
The CD has soft brushes on the writing surface at regular intervals that will gently brush the dust and dirt off your lens. It can be used in either a dry or wet state, by using the liquid provided with the kit. A little bit of this liquid on the brushes is generally enough to sort out most problems.
How to use:
- Apply a small amount of liquid to the brushes on the CD
- Insert the CD into your drive with the brushes facing downwards
- The program will autoload and then you will be able to play a media file
- Once the media file has been played to the end, the drive should now be cleared
This should help improve playback of DVD's, CD's, etc, and should help to reduce jumping and stutters.

How do I burn a 99 minute CD?
When you put a 99 minute CD into your machine, and check the amount of data you can store the first thing you will see is that it is the same size as a regular one.
This is not true as these discs are set up to be overburnt, and this is something that software programs can't detect.
What you have to do is set up the software on your machine so it can Overburn the disc, and this will allow you to access the extra data.
