While the disc is quoted at writable up-to that speed, the writing program will sometimes write at a slower speed to improve stability of the writing process.
The discs themselves are tested to 52x but the faster the speed the greater the possibility that damage can be done to the disc in the writing process.
Writers do not write at 48x all the way - they write at 48x MAX - on the outside of the disc, near the end of the writing cycle on a full disc.
A 48x writer, up until about 400mb has an effective write speed of only 14x. The manufacturers are quite deceptive about all this - but try it - you'll see it's true.
We also recommend using the newest version of Nero to produce the best results.
