What is the difference between DVD- and DVD+?

There are various electronics companies who all disagree about the best formats - they have basically developed into 2 factions - the DVD "minus" people and the DVD "plus" people. Depending on which side the maker of the writers is on; the writers will work with those discs better.

DVD Dash(Minus) is run by a group called the DVD Forum, website link.
Their disc format was the original DVD recordable disc and offers a very slightly bigger capacity.

DVD Plus is run by a group called the DVD Alliance, website link.
Their disc format hsa the better error checking and tends to give a slightly better quality of result.

Saying that both discs are nearly identical in quality now, and nearly all DVD burners and all players can handle all the major formats without a problem. With this in mind the issue of which DVD format to get isn't as bad as it was in 2000.

With standalone DVD Recorders however you have to be a bit more careful as they can be a bit more picky on the media they work with.
